Cecily Upton – a bike polo player from New York has been compiling a book of photographs of polo; by polo players all over the world for the last few months.

I submitted a few of my own photos for it, and am stoked to say that one of them made the cut!
I also spotted a few shots from Brad from Perth.

The book looks to be an awesome collection of some stunning photography, that also truely captures the community and atmosphere that is bike polo.

First day at Flagstaff Gardens

The sun shone, the birds were chirping, the BBQ was fired up and so were were we to play on this smooth new court

It was a pretty good turnout for a Sunday, many of us turning up just in time to catch some BBQ goodness courtesy of the Vic Market butchers who were almost giving the snags away near closing time (remember for next time!)

The surface is awesome to play on. Turns are easy, the surface feels nice and soft under the tyres, and the ball glides straight along merrily on its way. We played double-court style, the game play being quite a bit faster paced than on one court.

We played till 10pm or so under the happy hum of the four supermega floodlights providing more than adequate lighting to play.

There were some spectacular spills, with Scott requiring a trip to the hospital for an ankle injury, and Pete and RobB both going superman over their falling bikes

Auto Polo?

One question I’m frequently asked when talking about polo is “Isn’t that dangerous?!”, my response is usually along the lines of “Not really, depends if you’re playing with or against Pete. Also, I don’t think we’ve had any real injuries yet.” This doesn’t convince anyone.

Recently, the depths of the internet have shown me something polo related that definitely does look dangerous: Auto Polo, on old cars. Anyone up for a game?

Edgy Ikea

Ikea now has complete edges! While they need a little bit of work, to stop part of it falling over in gale force winds, it has greatly improved gameplay.

Despite the viscous winds and eventual rain, around 15 people turned up to play last night. Wind only impacted play slightly (ikea is fairly well sheltered). However, play only lasted a few games with rain, partly because everyone was wet (and started to get cold) and and partly because it was dark.

With the growing number of players at Richmond, Carlton and North Carlton, the waits between games are getting longer – ‘next game’ and ‘next next game’ mallet piles are becoming common. Another peculiarity at the moment is that we are spoiled for choice from Saturday to Tuesday, then left jonesing for the rest of the week for another polo fix. So keep your eyes peeled for good locations – and if you find one, take some photos or shoot some video, upload it to the Internet Hate Machine, and see what happens … like this:

Sure it’s supposed to be as hot as Hades this Thursday – but there’s tap water on site, and shade nearby. Harden the f@*k up!

Consulting this Parks Victoria map will help plan your ride. It’s at the East end of Fairlea Rd Fairfield. There is a gate, travelling there by bike is reccommended.
