This website is the homepage of Australian Bike Polo.

Each city has at least one editor at bikepolo.com.au. Please contact your local reps with news, photos and articles for the site.

The first Australian Hardcourt Bike Polo Championships (AHBPC) where held in Melbourne over the weekend of 28-29th November 2009.

Bike Polo has been played in Australia for over 3 years now, but originally started in Seattle, USA and quickly spread throughout North America to Vancouver and NYC and on to Europe.

Part of the reason why Bike Polo has caught on so quickly is because you don’t need any expensive or special equipment play a game. All you need is 6 players with bikes, some mallets made from Ski poles or Golf clubs and some water pipe, a few traffic cones and a ball.  Most of these things can be found at hardware stores or op-shops.

  1. Just a small note to those using 20″ wheels, I have found a supplier that has colored tyres. You would be looking at $39.95 each in Blue, Red, and Yellow (I think)….. Just drop us a line or pop into the store and let us know what you would like…..

    Cheers

  2. Hey Daniel, Thanks for the note, I’ll pass the word around to the rest of the crew. Thanks for being the main man in Brisbane, connecting to Bikepolo.com.au

It’s been good to have interstate visitors, and more than once too! (Brisbane is the only bikepolo city in Australia I havne’t played in… yet, but I definetly plan to!)

    See you at the nationals!

Hey Nathan, Thanks for the note, I’ll check out the link and circulate. if you have any 26 or 700 options then count me in :)

  3. We are the Frankston Chapter – we came and checked out the Nationals on Sunday – and fell in love! This sport is for us!! How do we register a team to play you guys??? We have found an old basketball court we can use, and are all madly building bikes we can use and cutting off our ski poles! What tips have you got for us all??? We were the mad group with all the crazy retro bikes and dragsters watching!!

  4. On equestion guys – we noticed most of the bikes had small chain rings – what are the specs of a typical chainset and crank kit – and what cog on the rear? any tips??

  5. Hey Bowie, send us an e-mail with your contact details. Let us know when you’re playing, we’ll add it to the Next Sessions/Locations on the site. I’m sure a few of us would love to come down and play in Frankston (maybe answer all your questions without so much typing.)

Personally I run a 30:16 gear ratio, but whatever works for you.

  6. Urbancyclist – we have a regular game now every Monday night at 6.30pm at the Seaford Football Ground – Seaford Rd. There is a court between the cricket nets at the far end of the oval which is perfect! We played this week and had ten different players – had a ball. We shot some video and took stacks of pics which I will publish when I get them from my mad BP mates!! We would LOVE to see anyone else join us for a game – we’re still very much beginners but experienced riders, so our skills are improving quickly….

We will come up to play at Carlton either Sun 10th or Sunday 17th – should be fun!!

  8. How can I edit the incorrect castlemaine info on the home page side-bar? We don’t play strictly fortnightly & we’ve changed courts lately. Our page is always up to date but the side-bar doesn’t reflect this…

  9. Castlemaine Polo is now 2nd & 4th Sunday of each month. BBQ/picnic lunch 12:30, polo from 1:30pm
Please note new courts: Maclise St, Casltemaine

  10. fresh as. hello. can’t wait ta grab a game. and where are all those doped up custom wheel disc covers coming from?? i wanna design my own. are they just decal stickers on hed covers cos they hell expensive? cheers ta!

  11. Hi Jode

Which city are you on fella?

We use Coreflute from craft shops.. about $10 a sheet and makes two. Cut it to the size of your wheel.. then art it up! paint it with a design or pop some stickers on.. then mount it on the bike with some cable ties.

  12. Hi – I’m interested in having a crack at this.
When’s your next game and if i pop into bunnings is there any recommended method for making one’s own mallet.

PS. My brother’s visiting Melbourne soon too and I’d love to bring him along. I’m currently fixing up a bike form him so he can join in on these kinds of fun adventures (I have to make it especially for him as he is HUMUNGOUS. Something like the bfg.)

Text me on 0413706283 if it’s any easier.

    • Hi Jo, Bunnings doesn’t really have the stuff for making mallets, but we do, you can borrow one the first few times you come down and we bring all the right bits and pieces every few weeks to make your own. See you one Sunday!
