It’s ours! Time to get some banners printed!

Well everyone, we have completed our 1 month trial of the Flagstaff multi-purpose polo courts and have been offered a permanent place on Sundays at this awesome court.
We have negotiated a reasonable flat rate booking with the court maintainers, Melbourne City Baths. Our booking is double-court polo from 3pm till 8pm!
The intention was to negotiate a rate that would be a gold coin(s) donation from our circa 25 regular players, however it looks like it will be more like $6 per player. Call it a fiver and we’re just about there.
Paying for polo has never been on the agenda, which is why some of us are working towards some Government grants like VicHealth or Active Melbourne to hopefully cover the court hire fees. Until we can secure some free government cashola, we all need to pitch in so we can play on this court.
During the meeting on Thursday with MCB, we negotiated a few particular points, being
- Rain: we do not pay if the court is rained out that day
- Flat rate: same rate in Winter and Summer (ie: no discount in Winter)
- Hours: 3pm to 8pm. If there are no other bookings we can hang around
- Cancellation: We can give 2 weeks notice of a cancellation, for special events etc.
- Cracks / resurfacing: The court is resurfaced every few years, after cracks appear. There are a few cracks already, so the court may be due for a resurface in the next year or so.
- Cleaning: There are cleaners that come to clean the area of rubbish and litter
- Repair: Repairs are fixed within just a few days
- Skids: Try to control braking or grab yourself a blue tyre if you’re a skid fiend
One of the limiting factors at other Polo venues has always been the amount of people that can play. Other venues can only support 1 game at a time. Flagstaff can support 2 games simultaneously, as seen in the 2nd week of our trial which worked very well. We are now in a position to spread the word far and wide knowing that we won’t be missing out on any games
This court has great potential for all of us, it’s central and has everything, it would be outstanding for Tournaments and special events. BBQ + Bins + Tables + Loo + Lawn bowls bar = perfect. Let’s make it happen!

Well done Mosco Cheap at twice the price!
We now have a good court for Sundays as well as Tuesday nights!
Why no play in the rain? That could mean no polo over half of winter…
Ah, we don’t have to *pay* if it’s rained out
If it’s raining so hard that we can’t play and we decide to cancel (and go to the pub), then we don’t have to pay for that day. makes it a lot less stressful!
Awesome venue for a major invitational.
Well done Rob!
Hehe, woops, guess I should read things properly…
Congrats guys! Looking forward to coming back down soon and having a hit with you guys at this awesome venue! So when are the beer taps being installed?
Beer taps, hmm yes, along with the deck chairs and sauna
Rob do we have any $cashola from the tourney for a banner?
We could easily and cheaply make a banner if we wanted to. A large bit of fabric/canvas + stencil and paint. DIY FTW!
I think the banner is a great idea and we should try and get it sorted asap to generate more interest. The more players we have the cheaper it gets and the more fun we all have each week.
I think getting something printed may be better, especially if it rains. Also if we are taking it on/off all the time it needs to withstand it.
Looking forward to sunday
Well done! Now we have to make a *lot* of edges.
What about we have a jar and throw in $0.50 each time we play a game? We could keep a bag of 50 cent pieces so people can get change.
Sorry I’ll be missing another Sunday, no I’m not sorry, I’ll be enjoying the polo tournament here in NY, that is if the rain ever stops. Had to leave the bike at “home” today and use the subway. Thursday polo was washed out. Ride to Coney island tomorrow, then the films start!
After playing at Flagstaff a few times I agree with Nik and we do need to invest in heaps of edging, I think we should get together and do it! I’ll put $ and time but we need to discuss who does what etc. What about we talk Tuesday and get there early next Sunday to start?
I have started a thread on the Google group “Edging at Flagstaff”
