This is the first year Bike Polo has featured at Messenger Championships in Australia.  Pickup was played late on Wednesday night after Melbourne players arrived in Perth.  Tournament Matches were played in Subiaco on Friday 9am – 12 noon and on Sunday 10am to 12 noon.  Pickup games were also played in the Speed Dome Inline Hockey Rink while Track events continued around the Court.

Bike Polo was a good complement to the ACMC this year, as it did not conflict directly with mainstay messenger events, and it maintained a good balance of structured tournament play and more informal pickup.

This post was  updated over the long weekend with live updates from Perth.

Good to be back

ow1Was nice to catch up with the Tuesday crowd again, I was gobsmacked to see floodlighting! Yeah so I’d been away for a bit recovering from a prang and the first thing I do is try and score from the half line (well I had just scored from the other goal line…) and whack my thumb against the bottom of my left drops. Thanks Charles for the on-the-spot first aid ;)
Bumping the melbournecyclist bike polo group again because … well because there’s more room for people to talk there, you’ll need to create a login but anyone can start a discussion topic, a little more democratic, yes? It suits me because I’d rather spend time there than at the F*c*b**k melb bike polo page workshopping ideas, and this site is currently more suited to top-down announcements and so on. No reason why both can’t operate simultaneously, especially as adding (and maintaining) forums here would be a timesink for already stretched admins.
Also bumping the Fyxomatosis Melburn Roobaix, a bring-any-bike-you-like ride through some of Melbourne’s cobbled streets and lanes, fashioned after the Paris-Roubaix road race in France. Starts at 12 noon, get there a bit earlier to register. April 18, first Sat after the Easter break. Familiarise yourself with those cafes if you can!

Count it?

Video replay of a controversial goal at the Oregon Bicycle Polo Championships between Balls Deep and Seattle’s Good Enough. To score (1) the ball must not be across the goal line and (2) the shooter must must shoot with the tip and not “shuffle” the ball with the side of his polo mallet. The goal was counted. This was the first game of two between Balls Deep from East Vancouver (tournament winners), and Seattle’s Good Enough (runners-up). Shot 8 March 2009.
